Old Oak at the Winter Watermeadow was painted plein air from the same vantage point as its companion piece Silver Birch at the Winter Watermeadow, turning to capture the view to the right during the golden hour of a January afternoon. Painting on location in the intense cold resulted in expressive, gestural marks that were later refined in the studio to evoke the magic of winter.
