Silver Birches at the Winter Watermeadow was painted plein air during the golden hour of a January afternoon to capture the setting sun lighting up the trees, with melting snow forming patterns on the ground. Painting on location in the intense cold resulted in expressive, gestural marks, that were later refined in the studio to evoke the magic of winter.
